Songut - Solar thermal systems

Preguntas frecuentes/ FAQ

What types of subsidies are available for the equipment?
Subsidies are calculated by each Autonomous Community and vary depending on the programs they offer. In general, the subsidies are calculated using the installed surface area. For the SG23 collectors, we can estimate a subsidy of €700 to €850 per collector; and for the bigger SG25 models, we can expect between €900 and €1100.

Can a storm or hail cause damage to the collectors? Do the collectors support the weight of snow?
The high quality solar collectors come equipped with crystal that can withstand hail. To protect the installation from lighting, we recommend connecting the collectors to a lightning rod. For snow, all of the solar collectors from Songut pass the SOLAR KEMARK certified quality test; which examines their resistance to different levels of pressure and weight. From this test and our experience, we know that the collectors can withstand the weight of snow. In Austria, for example, it is common to see thick layers of snow on the equipment without any problems.

Why are stainless steel pipes cheaper for installations when the retail price is more expensive?

The cost of an installation is determined by the net price of material, labor and follow-up service. If we only calculate the price of the equipment for an installation, the stainless steel piping is not cheaper. However, with the cost of labor in mind, stainless steel is higher quality and saves money in repairs over time. From experience we know that for each meter of copper piping installed, there is a maintenance cost of €2 (the average from hundreds of installations). It is better to offer the client more security upfront, save on labor costs and charge for a quality installation as soon as possible. The final consumers that are familiar with this piping usually request it (it is the only type with complete insulation), leaks don’t occur and the insulation is equipped to withstand open air exposure. Companies that try this type of piping use it for all their installations.

Since all of Songut’s products are made in Austria, are they approved for consumer use in Spain?
?
Yes, all of Songut’s products are authorized. The solar collectors are certified by the Ministry of Industry and are given an NPS number for collecting the subsidy.

Is using solar energy effective for heating systems?
Yes. Solar energy installations are very profitable for heating systems. This applies to both low and high temperature heat (under-floor heating and fan heaters, respectively). In the case of under-floor heating, a solar installation can provide between 40-50% of the total energy required. For high temperature heating, solar installations provide a lower percentage, but it is necessary to keep in mind that the mere use of a hot water tank for heating systems reduces energy costs. Also, the government subsidies for the collectors make them practically free.

Is using solar energy for heat economic?
From our point of view, yes. First, we know that a heating system always requires a special tank for heating systems, which automatically saves a big part of the fuel. Second, the subsidy for the collector is greater than its retail price. Lastly, the energy used for heating is cut in half. For these reasons, we believe it’s easy to make our clients see the advantage of using solar energy to power their heating system.

Does water leak through the roof after installing the solar panels?
As the mounting systems are designed for all types of roofing and use very reliable mounts, there shouldn’t be any problems. In case a client isn’t sure because they have a flat roof and don’t want to make holes in their asphalt roofing felt, we offer special counterweight mounts so the panels can be installed on top. We also offer integrated racking mounts in case the roof is tilted.

How much maintenance does a solar energy installation need?
A good installation shouldn’t require practically any, but it is recommended to provide a couple post service check-ups to make sure everything functions properly. Also, the final customer can check the system pressure themselves, and as long as it remains constant, the system is working and the high temperature transfer fluid does not need to be replaced. Finally, the temperature gauge for the water tank is another indicator of proper function. It is advisable to check the sacrificial anode and ph level at least once a year along with the installation inspection (including the heating system and boiler).
